Governor Haslam created an Interdepartmental Task Force to fight the Prescription Drug epidemic in Tennessee. The creation of this Task Force has raised awareness about the issue. Tennessee is now seeing a decrease in the amount of Prescription Drugs that are available. The new laws and increased treatment opportunities have been effective. Pressure from State and Local Law Enforcement, along with local communities, have been effective as well. Tennessee has succeeded in making Pain Medications harder to get for those who do not need them legitimately, making them more abuse deterrent, and giving Doctors more tools to monitor their patients who have been prescribed pain medicine. However, lurking in the shadows, Heroin has arrived on the scene. It has arrived like a tidal wave in the State of Tennessee. It is more potent, cheaper, more dangerous and more lethal than Prescription Opioid Pain Medicine. The demand for Opioids has been most pronounced in rural communities, while Heroin is surfacing more in major cities and suburbs. Research data from multiple sources, including the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, shows Heroin is sharply rising in Tennessee.
